5 Top Tips You Need to Know Before You DIY Vinyl Flooring

There are infinite DIY projects that can seem intimidating, but no DIY sounds as intimidating as installing your own Vinyl Flooring. Recently, I undertook this project in our sunroom and lived to tell about it. Was it the easiest DIY you’ve ever tried? Certainly not. But, installing Vinyl Flooring was easier than I believed, and there are some key tips to keep in your back pocket if you really want to live to tell the story of DIY flooring.

1. Do Your Research

First, do your research on most DIY projects. There is an unending supply of videos at our fingertips and they are not going to watch it alone! I suggest looking into some videos of other people who have laid out your best brand of flooring. Learning from the mistakes of others is an excellent way to learn best practices and I always try to watch a video before embarking on a project that is new to me.

2. Use the Right Tools

Then ensure you have the right tools. I highly recommend for this particular project using Vinyl Flooring – a rubber mallet or two, knee pads, pounding block, utility knife, drawbar, square, chalk line, laser level, and spacers. You may be familiar with these popular tools, however, if not, I’ll explain.

3. Acclimatize Floors to Room Temperature

If you’re ready with all the exact tools, you can get started on your Vinyl Flooring. I mention placing the flooring boxes in the room you are working in for a number of days before laying them down. This will provide the floors time to acclimate to the room temperature. Visit https://osram-amls.com/how-to-clean-vinyl-plank-flooring/ to read about How to Clean Vinyl Plank Flooring.

4. Start in the Right Place

When getting started, you’ll first want to ensure you use spacers between the wall and the floor with the purpose of the floor having room to expand. It is vital to begin in the upper left corner of a room, and as you lie down, go to the right and down altogether.

As a result, you’ll connect a pair of boards on the right, and next, you’ll connect a pair of boards in the following row. I found that placing the unopened boxes on top of the laid boards was a great help, so they didn’t move as much.

5. Be Scrupulous with Detail

For the first few rows, it may be trial and mistake at first, but making sure the seams are perfect will make the rest of the project much easier. Small taps with the rubber mallet on the hitting block and scrap bits are the key to making a perfect fit between the boards. Whether one seam is not tight, it will make a snowball effect and the rest of the boards will also finally have errors. Slow and steady wins the race with the front rows, but take your time and pay attention to detail to get your Vinyl Flooring rolling rapidly. When the first few rows are laid it starts running pretty fast and you will find yourself in a rut.
